PSLG Leader
September 2011 – April 2012
PSLG stands for Peer Supported Learning Group. At the start of my second year in university, I was asked to lead a PSLG to aid first years in java programming. It was no pay, but that didn’t bother me. Each session covered topics that were covered in the lectures that week. PSLG’s were introduced to help students who were struggling with the subject. Each session usually has between 1-6 students, but more will appear when exams are coming up. Every week I had to prepare for a session and write a review on it, stating how well the students were doing. I covered the topics from my point of view rather than a lecturer’s point of view, as I had a better understanding of where the students were coming from as I was in the same position as the year before.
As a PSLG Leader, I learned how to prepare for a session and how to teach a small group of students. I am currently a PSLG Leader and I enjoy being one. Statistically, students who go to the PSLG sessions have a higher grade than the average grade of the class. With that in mind, I am glad to be helping students have a better grasp of the subject.
I received the President’s Volunteer Silver Award for this.
